Jihan Jamal!

Excellent Instructor at the Miami Belly Dance Convention 2010!

B.O.D.Y RAKS EXTREME 2010 WORKSHOPS BY JIHAN JAMAL, FOR MBC:
Class Syllabus, Day one:
EXTREME CHOREOGRAPHY SERIES – Jihan Jamal’s “Mermaids of the Nile” – Dance Theatre choreography for solo artist and/or dance troupe; One of Jihan’s favorite dance piece productions, set to the composition by Mohammed Adbel Wahab, “Fi Youm Wa Leyla” (All in a day and a night). This choreography is a mix of both Classical Raks Sharqi technique, with elelments of Egyptian and Tunisian Folk and interpretational nuances (floor work), and the use of “jarras” (vases) as props. The piece can be performed with veils, in lieu of the water vases. Please wear leggings, tights or dance pants, so that you feel comfortable descending to the floor. Bring veils. If you have an unbreakable vase, please bring it as well. I will have some available.
Class Syllabus, Day two:
EXTREME CHOREOGRAPHY SERIES – Jihan Jamal’s Baladi and Interpretive Fusion piece, “EL KHAHIRA – A CUBAN IN CAIRO” – Dance Theatre choreography for solo artist and/or dance troupe. This choreography is an inspiration of my own travels and experiences in Cairo, The City Victorious – “EL KHAHIRA”, and it is a Baladi piece with elements of Cuban “Guaguanco” (an Afro-Cuban bi-product of Rhumba) and “Chancleteo” (wooden sandal dance, worn by women in the pre-Castro carnivals in Cuba to “arroyar” (drag-walk), which are also used in Cairo in the hammams (baths). This is a very energetic, invigorating and fun piece; the music for this number is Egyptian Pop.

and many others, Aubre has developed her own beautiful and elegant style. She has shared stages with Cirque du Soleil and the Blue Man Group. Aubre performed with the BDSS as well as served as Assistant Director while touring extensively through Europe and North America and can be seen on the “Bellydance Superstars: Live at the Folies Bergere” dvd. Aubre is also the winner of the IBDC Professional competition and Fusion division for 2007. She is now the Artistic Director of the Lumina Bellydance Company.

SHERRY BIOGRAPHY.

Sherri – Tribal Fusion Bellydancer

Sherri has been a student of dance since the age of five with diverse experience ranging from ballet to gymnastics, jazz to modern and a large does of hip hop. Her passion for tribal bellydance began in 1999 when she began studying with the internationally celebrated Heather Stants, director of the influential Urban Tribal Dance Company. She soon became a full member performing with the company regularly at private events and dance festivals across the US.

Since then, Sherri has had the honor of working with many influential and critically acclaimed professional dance companies and performance groups. Among them are Desert Sin as a principal dancer and as a frequent featured guest performer with Atash Maya of San Diego, Lucent Dossier of Los Angeles and Lucha Va Voom also of Los Angeles.

Primarily a tribal fusion dancer, Sherri is distinguishable in her unique serpentine stylization, an interpretation that embodies something close to bellydance infused with contortionism. She is also an extremely versatile dancer and can morph from one extreme physical state to the next in an instant. As a very diverse performer who enjoys continually challenging herself, Sherri finds that dance theatre, a place where choreography, music, staging and costuming come together to form something much greater than the sum of their parts, is where she derives the most professional satisfaction.

Prior to her (now healed) back injury, Sherri’s latest professional coup was a coveted position as the newest tribal member of an internationally touring bellydance company. Sidelined from the tour in recovery, Sherri decided to start her own performance company and costuming line (coming soon), Cherchez La Femme (literal translation: “look to the woman” though the phrase is usually used in an infamous sense), a nickname given to her as a child by her late father.

Having relocated to Los Angeles in 2005, Sherri continues to study dance in various incarnations and teaches weekly tribal fusion dance classes at EION 2013 in Venice Beach. Sherri teaches and performs internationally.

ANSUYA BIOGRAPHY.

Ansuya is considered one of the most talented and accomplished performers, choreographers, instructors, and entrepreneurs in the Bellydance world today.

With thousands of students across the globe, numerous television appearances, an IAMED Best Cabaret Dancer of the year award and three Golden Belly Awards, Ansuya is a superstar in her field.

WHAT ARE ANSUYA’S LATEST PROJECTS?

Online Bellydance Classes with Ansuya at www.ansuya.com, has her reaching her worldwide fan base on a weekly basis providing them with top of the line Bellydance training with a fun TV show feel. With top selling instructional DVD’s on the market, acting experience including roles on Judging Amy and Days of Our Lives, and countless on camera press interviews, this was a natural progression for Ansuya. Her brand new dance company “Gypsy Sugar” showcases her unique style which she calls “Cabaribalusion”. This eclectic name blends Cabaret, Tribal and Fusion techniques (including Indian, Spanish, African, Gypsy, and Modern Egyptian) with her own innovations to create an extensive and impressive vocabulary that she uses in her choreographies. With an IAMED Best Troupe of the Year nomination for directing respected company “Yaliel”, inherited from her renowned mother and Bellydance teacher, Jenaeni, this troupe is already on the map with all eyes expecting more cutting edge material. Teaming up with new talent, Ozzy, on stage as her drummer and off stage as her boyfriend has fans eager to see their chemistry in live performances. Performing with the Bellydance Superstars at the Raks Brittania, Raks America and Raks LA festivals continues her pioneering work with this pivotal company, headed by legendary record producer Miles Copeland who named her a Bellydance Superstar when he invited her along with four other top Bellydancers to perform at the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA and The Roxy in Hollywood, CA to kick off a Bellydance compilation CD. This was followed by a performance at the World Peace Music Awards in Bali, which was telecast live to millions. They then went on tour with the Lollapalooza rock festival, which garnered them the Rolling Stone magazine quote: “Must see of the second stage”. This was followed by their own touring with several trips across the U.S., Canada, and Europe gathering up press including the Jimmy Kimmel Live show, the John Mackenroe show, Otro Rollo, the Regis and Kelly Live Show, the Huell Howser show and MTV. They also did several press junkets in Borders Book Stores and Virgin Record Stores across the nation. With performances at the Victoria Theatre in Barcelona, Spain and the Folies Bergere theatre in Paris, France, the Bellydance Superstars are breaking ground in the world of dance. There are two documentaries about their journey – “Behind the Shimmy”, directed by Jordan Copeland and “American Bellydancer”, directed by John Brandise. “American Bellydancer” played at the Tiburon Film Festival in Northern California and has shown on PBS.

WHERE DID ANSUYA COME FROM?

Growing up in a small town called Ojai in California, as the daughter of renowned Bellydancer, Jenaeni, Ansuya’s first shining moments included being crowned “Miss Teen Ojai” and appearing as the little star of her mother’s annual Bellydance concerts. Her father, being of royal Indian descent, added mystique and legend to her artsy and somewhat hippy upbringing. Becoming a model for several local print jobs lead to an invitation to model in Tokyo, Japan. Moving to Hollywood became the next logical step where Ansuya appeared on television shows such as Jack and Jill, The Nanny, VIP, Weird Science, and the Jim Jay and Ann show, music videos for artists such as Beck and Sons of Funk and commercials for Fox and Toshiba. She can also be seen in the title sequence of the DVD version of the Bond film classic, Octopussy. Studying with leading acting coaches, such as Lynn Redgrave, Ansuya developed her additional talent as an actress and has had a recurring role on the daytime drama Days of our Lives and a guest spot on primetime series, Judging Amy.
