Workshop Descriptions:
Nandana – American Tribal Style moves and combinations for the adventurous dancer!
American Tribal Style (ATS) is known for its captivating and awe-inspiring group improvisation. Using body language to help “talk” to their partners & create seamless transitions, ATS dancers use a variety of moves and combinations to create a powerful, entertaining, and fun dance form. This workshop will focus on breaking down some of these moves and combinations, as well as the cues that go along with them. We will then explore some options for using them with a partner, in addition to a group. All of these moves can be used for solo dance, group improvisation, or choreographies. This workshop is good for any level and style of dancer.
Aela Badiana – “Shimmy Variations and Hagallah: Egyptian “bling” for Cabaret and Tribal”
In this workshop you’ll learn the proper Egyptian Hagallah and Shimmy Variations.After a short warm up we will break down the technique of the Hagallah, drill shimmy variations to create new combinations of this traditional move. These combos can be used in all of your performances. We will then pack them into fun combinations that are guaranteed to spice up your performances, whether improvised or choreographed.
Jeremiah Soto – “Drumming For Dancers” (great for Dancers & Drummers!)
-Learn the three fundamental hits of Arabic drumming, Dum, Tek, Left Handed Tek (or Ka),
-Strengthening drills, and call and answer exercises (split into groups)
-Learn and recognize basic rhythms such as Beledi, Maqsum, Saidi, Ayyub and Cheftitelli.

Shake over the past years has grown from a day of Energy, Movement and Dance to a unique week-end of multicultural and international relaxation and holistic living – come for the weekend – stay locally or camp around the castle – but also, if you prefer, just pop-in for your preferred course – this is a special time-out for everyone – every age – every taste – every family – a community switching-on!

With children’s workshops in Circus Skills, Jazz and African Drumming, a bouncy castle and facepainting, specialist workshops for mums and dads and market stalls to browse, as well as live music and dance demonstrations there will be something for the entire family at Shakefest! This is a community run holistic fair day for families, international dance enthusiasts and anybody who is active!

For the Festival of the Silk Road, Afsaneh Art & Culture Society unites a group of phenomenal Bay Area dance and musical guests to present a vibrant exploration of the rich cultural traditions of the Silk Road, as well as a not-to-miss pre-performance bazaar including traditional clothing, exhibits, art, and refreshments. This year’s festival will also showcase some dynamic innovations, a cross-pollination of culture and ideas, sizzling with poetic lyricism and dazzling moves.

This critically acclaimed group presents performances and activities in the Bay Area and beyond, featuring dance, poetry, and music of the Silk Road —the historic trade route stretching 7,000 miles across Eurasia from the China Sea in the east to the Mediterranean in the west. Gorgeously crafted, authentic and rarely-seen traditional dances from Central Asia and Iran as well as cutting-edge, contemporary work based on traditional themes.
