Kaya and Sadie 2011 “Summer Workshop Series”

Hello Friends and Dancers! We are so excited to announce our 2011 Summer Workshop Series, our biggest event of the year, 10-hours of butt-kicking training and an exciting Hafla Dance Party! We hope to see you there! Friday, MAY 13th through Sunday, MAY 15th, 2011 Join Kaya and Sadie in beautiful Denver, Colorado for their “6th Annual Summer Workshop Series”. Experience three action-packed days of intense training for dancers under Sadie & Kaya’s exclusive “Tandem Training Method” format. The weekend will include the newest of Kaya and Sadie’s challenging technique and choreography, master classes for intermediate/advanced level dancers, a Samba class and a Hafla dance show. Participants who register for the full weekend package will be eligible to receive a 4-minute dance slot in the Friday Night Hafla Dance Party. (Dance slots are limited to 15 and given on a first come, first serve basis)

Friday Night Hafla Dance Party, May 13th, 2011 A spectacular Hafla dance show featuring Kaya and Sadie, as well as performances by other local talent and weekend workshop participants! LOCATION: The Highland House Event Center 3617 Osage St., Denver, Colorado 80211 Time: 8:30pm-10:30pm, Doors open @ 8:00pm Tickets: $8.00 advanced $10.00 @ the door Light refreshments will be available for donation.  NO ALCOHOL will be available at the venue so get your drink on before or after the show. Plenty of lot and street parking. Tickets available through Sadie & Kaya, not The Highland House. (participants taking the full weekend package will be admitted into The Hafla free of charge as a performer or patron.  Extra tickets for friends or family must be purchased separately)

Saturday, May 14th, 2011– “Samba No Pe” Workshop 11:00am-12:30pm REGISTRATION STARTS@ 10:30am. Kick the weekend workshops off with our most exciting and fun workshop. Energetic, pulsating rhythms and movements, the Samba No Pe is the soloist dance made infamous at Rio’s Carnaval. Get an excellent cardio and fat burning workout, more than the average kickboxing class, while learning the technique of this exciting dance form. Belly Dancers, add some extra spice to your dance vocabulary. If you like Zumba, you will LOVE SAMBA!! Bring heels if you would like to try Samba in your heels LUNCH FROM 12:30-1:30p (on your own)

Saturday, May 14th, 2011–”The Art of Taksim” 1:30pm-3:30pm Learn the secrets to mastering the art of The Taksim~ the emotional and poetic improvised solo in Middle Eastern Music ~ Melodic instrumentals often accompanied by the Cifti Telli rhythm with its hypnotic cadence of quick and slow beats. Dancing to a Cifti Teli Taksim uses slow, flowing movements that reflect an emotional connection to and understanding of the melody, as well as sharp accents that display the power of the drum. Explore this exciting part of the dance set, as Sadie & Kaya guide you through technique, drills, combinations and tips for working with this beautiful music.

Saturday, May 14th, 2011–”Modern Belly Dance Fusion Kaya & Sadie-Style” 3:45pm-6:15pm Kaya & Sadie will teach their latest Modern Fusion choreography. Signature technique and layering with exciting foot patterns, transitions and jazz combos. The class will be taught at the intermediate/advanced level.

Sunday, May 15th, 2011–”Drum Solo Boot Camp” MASTER CLASS 10:30am-12:30pm REGISTRATION STARTS @10:00am Gear up to take on some of Sadie & Kaya’s most challenging Drum Solo technique, and drills. This workshop is open to all levels however it will be fast paced and some prior bellydance training is recommended. LUNCH from 12:30pm-1:00pm (on your own) Sunday, May 15th, 2011–”Drum Solo Choreography” MASTER CLASS 1:00pm-3:00pm Sadie & Kaya are known world wide as two of the best choreographers and performers of the drum solo. Now its time to put everything you have learned over the weekend into action with Sadie & Kaya’s latest Drum Solo Choreography!! BELLY DANCE ARIELLAH – AT THE HEART OF IT ALL (A1 – €80)

At the heart of it all is convergence of dance, technique, flexibility, strength, mind, spirit and art. Train your mind with technique, train your heart to dance and all else will fall in place. In this dance training course emphasis will be placed on the combination of not only technique but an equal counterpart of dance expression. Creative processes and internal work written and oral will also be discussed. The workshop will include an intensive technique and body conditioning section. This mini intensive course is designed to give the dancer the encouragement and tools necessary to take home and incorporate into his or her own practice in order to reach the next level, the next challenge.

BELLY DANCE NA’LA & SHAKRA -

TRIBAL AFRICAN FUSION (S1 – 40)

Meet the demands of fast, powerful drum rhythms with more than a shimmy! Using the extension, power, and speed of West African, you can add an intensity to your ATS combinations that will blow your audience away with energy and fun! Oh yes, did we mention how much fun you will have as you soar, jump, stretch, and fling with your troupemates? Blending basics and combos from ATS, we will add on to your improve repertoire with 2 non-stop Tribal African combos. Afraid you may forget it all by the time you get home? Fear not, you will be given a link for a video that will show Shakra demonstrating the combos so you will always have a refresher. Add some high energy West African flair to your performance and practice!

BELLY DANCE SHAKRA – UP, DOWN AND ALL AROUND

(S2 – €40)

Looking to broaden your range of belly dance movement? Consider adding some West African flavor to your dance repertoire! West African dance is known for it’s delicious arm extension and large, powerful movements, and Shakra will break these down into digestible steps that any belly dancer can absorb. In this fun and challenging workshop you will be taught the basics of IAF (Industrial African Fusion); from low grounding moves to uplifting freeing moves that show you how to defy gravity. Mix in one part belly dance and one part attitude, and you have the recipe for a delicious dance creation! Sound like fun? Throw yourself in and be prepared to sweat!

Don’t Just Stand There! Get up and DANCE! Explore the floor…move like a dancer…explore arm and body transitions, footwork, moving combos and other related DANCE concepts.

- GOING TO THE SHAKRA LAB (S2 – 40)

The phrase used among street dancers in the US, “Going to the Lab,” means a dancer is going to stop practicing the dance they know to discover the new ideas and concepts in dance they don’t know. It is through this journey outside your comfort zone that discovery can be made and creativity can be achieved. When “going to the lab”, dancers will uncover new moves that feel intuitive to their own body and ideas that can only be discovered through a sense of play, openness, and adventure. It is in lab that a dancer can feel free to be daring, silly, dramatic, in both mind and movement, and mistakes are encouraged to be made. Step into the Shakra Lab where we will introduce you to some of the fun games we play to discover new movements. Through these experiments you not only learn about yourselves as dancers but strengthen connections with your fellow troupemates. This is the time to relax and enjoy dance movement with a sense of play, because at Shakra Lab there are no mistakes only new lessons to learn.

SW Florida’s semi-annual Hafla (party) is happening!
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for complimentary Mediterranean mezza and shopping at the Bazaar! We have our biggest Bazaar yet featuring everything for the Belly Dancer, from jewelry, accessories, bodystockings and costume separates to bargain prices on full costumes from Joharah! Gift certificates will also be available for Belly Dance classes in Cape Coral, Ft Myers or Naples!
At 7 p.m. the show starts, featuring group and solo performances in Cabaret, Tribal and Fusion Belly Dance styles; plus a Hawaiian Hula showcase! Dancers from throughout SW Florida as well as special out-of-town guests will perform!
There will also be open Belly Dance time throughout the evening, so bring your hip scarf (or buy one at the Bazaar) and celebrate the season!
